What is WordPress?

WordPress is a CMS (Content Management System) which powers a huge number of websites – nearly 30% of everything online is built using WordPress! That’s pretty impressive for free software! The system has tools for everyone from personal bloggers, small business, to large corporations! WordPress makes it possible for anyone to create an online presence in minutes.

The main feature that make WordPress so appealing is the ease of use. WordPress has a simple, and easy-to-use interface, and the system is split into two halves. The “back-end” or admin area, is where the site owner can log in, and create, edit or delete posts and pages. The “front-end” is the website, the place the visitor see. Some (but not all) of WordPress’s popular features are;

  • Automated backups
  • Stability & relaiablity
  • Ease of use
  • Multiple user levels (admin, editors, customers etc)
  • Flexible scheduling – schedule posts for days, weeks or months in advance
  • Ease of themeing – choose from 1000’s of pre-built themes, or create your own
  • Restore or Rollback deleted pages

As part of my service, I offer training on all websites, and I use WordPress for the majority of the sites I build, purely for ease of use at client-handover time. I have found, that generally after only a few hours use, most clients are proficient enough with WordPress to keep their site updated and are able to add pages and posts independently.
